In preparation for their first day at Wantirna College, here are few things that Year 7 students and their families can do over the holidays.

Attend Orientation Day

The College runs an Orientation Day for all new 2019 Year 7 students on Tuesday 11th December.  This is an opportunity for students to meet their teachers, other students and become familiar with the layout of the College.

Practice opening your new combination lock

Combination locks can sometimes be tricky to open the first time you use them. Some practice over the holidays will help students become familiar with their combination code and how to unlock it.

Getting to and from school

The holidays are a great time for students to become familiar with how they are getting to and from school. Are they walking? Catching a bus? How long will it take them to travel to and from school? Learning about the correct route to school and even practicing getting to and from the school is a helpful exercise in building students confidence.

Talk about how they are feeling

Entering secondary school is a milestone for all students. It signifies a move from childhood to adolescence and brings with it a whole range of new experiences for both the young person and their families. The holidays are a good time for students and their families to talk about how they are feeling about the transition to secondary school.

Some things to discuss could include:

  • dispelling any myths about beginning secondary school.
  • listening to any concerns that the Year 7 student may have and reassure them.
  • reminding students that they do not need to remember everything that they learnt at Orientation day.

There will be many new things throughout their transition and their teachers will be understanding and supportive.

Name your books

Students should name all of their school books. At this stage, students don’t need to assign exercise books to particular subjects. Classroom teachers will go through this with Year 7 students at the beginning of 2019.

Your first day at Wantirna College

Year 7 students begin school on Wednesday 30 January 2019. Students are asked to meet at the Wantirna College Theatre at 8:30am. The morning will begin with an assembly to welcome students to Wantirna College and students will find out their home group and home group teacher.

Year 7 Transition Camp

The Camp takes place in the week of 11th to 15th February at a camp in the Dandenong Ranges. There are a range of challenging and enjoyable activities from Low Ropes and Archery to the Flying Fox and a reptile interactive display.

The purpose of the Year 7 camp is to assist students with their orientation and transition to secondary school. Research indicates that one of the biggest concerns of students moving to secondary school is whether they will make friends or not. Each class will work with two of their core teachers on activities that will help to build their new team. The Year 7 Year level Leaders are running the camp and will work closely with all groups in the endeavour to get to know their cohort.
