Assessment – The Developmental Approach

We use a developmental approach to assessment, which means assessment is not just about grades; it’s about tracking students skill development over time using Developmental Rubrics— this helps guide both teaching and learning.

Learning skills are teased out from the Victorian Curriculum and the VCE study designs into topic-based rubrics accessible on Maestro. The skills in these rubrics are written in student friendly language and help students and teachers design short, regular formative assessments, see progress, understand expectations, and monitor growth throughout a unit of work.

At year 7-10, skills are scaffolded from well below to well beyond the age-expected levels- making learning accessible for all students.

At VCE, students clearly understand what they need to say, make, do or write to achieve a satisfactory result in each subject. They also illustrate how students can strive beyond satisfactory into stretch skills – promoting achievement excellence.

Students and parents can view rubrics and progress data at any time through the Maestro system, making learning transparent and easy to follow. Summative Assessments are a critical part of the program and assess levels of performance with comments and grade feedback provided at the end of a unit or topic.

Academic Review Conferences are held twice a year and parents/carers are expected to attend along with their child. These are opportunities to review the semester of learning, attendance, behaviour and wellbeing. We encourage all parents/carers to attend these valuable meetings.

Maestro

Maestro is an online platform that helps teachers, students, and parents track student progress throughout the year. It brings together learning data and feedback in one place, giving a clear picture of how each student is progressing.

How it supports learning

• Teachers use Maestro to plan lessons, assess learning, and provide timely feedback.
• It highlights each student’s strengths and areas for improvement, allowing teachers to adjust teaching to meet individual needs.
• In senior years, it also supports students working towards VCE success.

How students use Maestro

• Students use rubrics to understand what they are learning and what is expected next.
• They can track their own progress, reflect on their work, and set learning goals.
• This helps students take more ownership of their learning and build confidence.

• Parents can access Maestro at any time to see their child’s progress, feedback, and next steps.
• This provides a clear and ongoing understanding of learning growth across the year.
• It also helps parents support learning at home and stay connected to their child’s education.
