Gabrielle Cameron – Class of 2017

I will never forget my time at Wantirna College and will always be grateful for the formative experiences I had there. I graduated Class of 2017 and was honoured to be College Captain. I genuinely loved the College and wanted to see students thrive in every way. It’s beautiful to see it continue to flourish!
Throughout High School, I had various ideas about what I thought I’d want to do after graduation, but I struggled to ‘land’ on anything. I simply did subjects that I found interesting and learned for the joy of learning! My favourite subjects were English and Theatre Studies. I wrote avidly and enjoyed sharing my creative writing with my English teachers, who were always happy to provide their feedback (thanks especially to Alice White!). That was the special thing about my teachers – they really cared about developing me as a person, beyond teaching me a set curriculum. I’ll forever be grateful to my Year 12 Biology teacher, Dina Mingos, who took so much time to understand how I learned, and to adapt her teaching style to suit the way my brain absorbed information. She peered into my psyche and somehow figured out how I learned better than anyone else ever had. It was amazing!
Following graduation, I had the opportunity to travel and learn more about myself. Initially I thought I’d go into international journalism, because of my loves of writing and travel. But then I discovered healthcare, and it changed everything. I now work as a Registered Nurse in WA, and it is such a joy to grow in that discipline and help people in their dark hours. I also took the opportunity to work as an RN in remote Queensland, which was just so exciting. Ever since my Year 11 NT tour, I’ve not been able to kick my love of the Aussie outback! I certainly have the travel bug and can’t wait to see more of our incredible world. Outside of work, I love connecting with my friends, most of whom I met at church. I also enjoy acrylic painting (something else I discovered since school!). And I still enjoy reading, which would make my English teachers happy to hear!
