Languages

Studying another language improves students’ ability to communicate in their own language, as well as the new language. It also has the added advantage of exposing students to new societies and cultures, improving creative and lateral thinking and developing understanding of self.

Chinese (Mandarin) and Spanish alongside English are the most spoken languages in the world. Currently, more than 1.3 billion people speak Chinese (Mandarin) and over 500 million people speak Spanish as a first language.

Year 7 and 8

The study of language is compulsory at Wantirna College in both Years 7 and 8. Students may choose to study either Chinese (Mandarin) or Spanish. Throughout their study, students will learn to communicate and engage in basic conversation in the target language and develop the foundations for literacy in their selected language. They will also learn about the variety of cultures in these global communities and be able to make comparisons with Australia and the world.

Year 9 and 10

In Year 9, students can elect to continue with their language studies in either one or two semesters:

  • Chinese through Social Media
  • Chinese through Travel
  • Spanish through Film
  • Spanish through Art & Culture

In Year 10, language is a full year of study. Students can elect to complete the required two semesters in either:

  • Chinese First Language (Mandarin)
  • Chinese Second Language (Mandarin)
  • Spanish

Year 11 and 12

In Years 11 and 12, students continuing with their Language studies can elect:

  • Spanish (Unit 1 and 2 only)
  • Chinese First Language (Mandarin)
  • Chinese Second Language (Mandarin)

We strongly encourage all students to continue with their language study. Research has shown that literacy in another language enhances literacy in a student’s own language, improves and develops cognition and lateral thinking. In a globalised world, the ability to communicate in other languages and connect with others opens up a wealth of opportunities in future study, travel and employment opportunities.

The College offers annual cultural tours to China and Spain.
