Languages
Studying another language improves students’ ability to communicate in their own language, as well as the new language. It also has the added advantage of exposing students to new societies and cultures, improving creative and lateral thinking and developing understanding of self.
Chinese (Mandarin) is one of the most spoken languages in the world. Currently, more than 1.3 billion people speak Chinese (Mandarin) and China is Australia’s biggest trading partner.
Years 7 and 8
The study of language is compulsory at Wantirna College in both Years 7 and 8. Students study Chinese (Mandarin). Throughout their study, students will learn to communicate and engage in basic conversation in Chinese and develop the foundations for literacy. They will also learn about the variety of cultures in the global Chinese speaking communities and be able to make comparisons with Australia and the world.
Years 9 and 10
In Years 9 and 10, students have the opportunity to select from four electives across the two years to continue their Language studies.
In even-numbered years (2026, 2028, etc), the electives offered are:
- Chinese Health and Body
- Chinese Fashion and Entertainment
In odd-numbered years (2025, 2027, etc), the electives offered are:
- Chinese through Travel
- Chinese Art and Culture
Students may choose to undertake one or two electives in each of Year 9 and Year 10. It is recommended that students considering VCE Chinese undertake at least three of the four electives over two years.
Years 11 and 12
In Years 11 and 12, students continuing with their Language studies can select:
- Chinese First Language
- Chinese Second Language/Second Language Advanced
- Chinese Language, Culture and Society
We strongly encourage all students to continue with their language study. Research has shown that literacy in another language enhances literacy in a student’s own language, improves and develops cognition and lateral thinking. In a globalised world, the ability to communicate in other languages and connect with others opens up a wealth of opportunities in future study, travel and employment opportunities.
